6th grade Nuts & Bolts:
June 3rd update from Mrs. Z
We’ve made it to June, in these strange times. Thank you so much for persevering through this Distance Learning experience. I appreciate all families for working with students and trying to stay positive through the last quarter of elementary school.
Tonight is Poynter Information Night! Information will be offered in both Spanish and English, and the event begins at 6:00 p.m. The event will take place on google meets, and the access code is jiu-sfyo-edk.
June 8th is text book return day. Mrs. McLain has sent information out, about this. Students should return health text books and math text books anytime between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. This is also the perfect time to return any of my classroom supplies and/or classroom library books. Lenox library books and/or Mrs. Young’s borrowed band instruments may also be returned, at this time.
June 9th is a combined 6th grade class meeting opportunity! We really hope all 6th graders will join us, for this. It will be offered through google meets, at noon, and the access code is 6thcommunitycircle.
On June 10th, there will be a “surprise” in my google classrooms. Please join your 6th grader to see the “surprise”, as it’s for all 6th graders and their families.
As always, please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have. Even better yet, please encourage your student to e-mail me with questions/concerns he/she may have. I’m happy to interact with families!
This will be my last class newsletter. I’ve enjoyed working with all the 6th grade families, this year, and I wish you all the best. Congratulations!
May 27th update from Mrs. Z
I hope everyone is healthy and happy! Thanks so much for playing and having fun with your kids, for the Adventures of Sojourner Activity! It sounds like a lot of laughing happened!
On June 8th, there will be a time set up for textbooks to be returned to Lenox. Mrs. McLain will be sending more information out about that, as the time gets closer. If your sixth grader has borrowed any of my books, from my class library, I would really like for him/her to return them to Lenox, at the same time that text books are returned. Thanks in advance, for that.
Please help your sixth grader to remember that we have a couple of special things planned for the last week of school. June 9th is the combined 6th grade Community Circle, at noon. Then, our last homeroom Community Circles will be at 10:30 a..m. on June 10th.
Grades continue to be posted in parentvue/studentvue.
As always, please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have. Even better yet, please encourage your student to e-mail me with questions/concerns he/she may have. I’m happy to interact with families!
May 20th update from Mrs. Z
Last week was fourth quarter midterm! We just have a few more weeks of sixth grade to go! Celebrate your sixth grader!
The last week of school is a half week, for students. June 8th will be the last day that Mr. Kha and I will post new materials to learn and work on. On June 9th, students will be wrapping up some ELA and Social Studies projects. We will also have a combined 6th grade Community Circle, at noon, on June 9th. On June 10th, students will need to get into google classroom, for a surprise. Then, all sixth graders will have a final Community Circle, with their homeroom classes, at 10:30 a.m. June 10th, by 11:05 a.m. is also the final day for students to submit any work, for grading.
There will be no school, on Monday, due to Memorial Day. Therefore, there will not be any new posts to our google classroom, on Monday. Have fun with your families, and stay safe and healthy.
Grades continue to be posted in parentvue/studentvue.
As always, please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have. Even better yet, please encourage your student to e-mail me with questions/concerns he/she may have. I’m happy to interact with families!
May 13th update from Mrs. Z
We’ve got a few long-term projects, in the works. During fourth quarter, I try to have students experience and plan for projects and assignments that take longer than a day to complete. We’ve been inching into this, since the beginning of the year, and now, I’m hoping that long-term projects are almost second nature to our pre-middle school students! When they leave Lenox, it’s important to me that my students are not overwhelmed when they see big projects, with many components, and a due date that is a month away. I want them to know how to break those projects down, and backward plan for how they are going to complete parts of the whole, a day at a time. I want them to be able to do this and still keep up with the every-day assignments that will still be coming at them from six different teachers, next year.
Currently, students have a New Frontiers writing task that is due June 1. They are learning the countries of western Europe, for a Country Quiz, on June 1. They have a Country Report Brochure that is due June 8, and some of them are starting a new Book It Project that will be due on June 10. Parents can help by cheering students on and helping them to keep up with and monitor and adjust their backward plans.
As always, please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have. Even better yet, please encourage your student to e-mail me with questions/concerns he/she may have. I’m happy to interact with families!
May 6th update from Mrs. Z
It’s great to be posting new material for students to interact with, in my google classrooms. I hope students and families were able to take the last two weeks to catch up and learn to navigate Distance Learning!
As always, please continue to help students to advocate for themselves. It’s such an important skill to master, before moving to middle school. Please have students e-mail me with questions or concerns they have. I’ve already had phone conferences and google meets sessions with students who need that face-to-face interaction with me, in order to understand some of the learning. It’s what I do, and I’m happy to help students along!
I’m wishing everyone health, safety, and happiness!
April 29th update from Mrs. Z
Poynter Forecasting is due to Poynter by May 1. Be sure that is complete!
Congratulations to our Communication Crew Task Forces. Pawani, Zach, Ella, and Claire all worked hard to make sure that we were still able to release our final “Pioneer Post” of the year! Jazzlyn, Pawani, Harriet, and Ella worked hard and had many google meet meetings with Communication Crew advisors, in April, to complete the yearbook, before the April 27th deadline! Thanks to them, Lenox will still have a yearbook, by the end of the year!
Tomorrow, families may go to Lenox to pick up students’ belongings. 6th graders whose last names begin with A-F may pick up belongings between 11:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. 6th graders whose last names begin with G-P may pick up belongings between 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m., and 6th graders whose last names begin with R-W may pick up belongings between 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. When I put students’ belongings together, I also put some papers that they will need for upcoming assignments: Western Europe Study Guide, three sheets of white construction paper, Mayan Math, and People of the Western Hemisphere map. Please help your student to put those papers in a safe place, where they will be able to access them, when needed.
April 22nd update from Mrs. Z
Poynter Forecasting is here! Be sure to look through all the Poynter forms, with your student, and get everything filled out and returned to Poynter by May 1! What an exciting time!
On Monday, I went into the classroom to get students’ belongings together. Mrs. McLain will be getting information to families about how pick up for those belongings is going to work. With students’ belongings, I also put some papers that they will need in upcoming assignments: Western Europe Study Guide, three sheets of white construction paper, Mayan Math, and People of the Western Hemisphere map. Please help your student to put those papers in a safe place, where they will be able to access them, when needed.
I have been asked to provide another example schedule for families/students to follow. If you already have a family schedule in place, please do not feel like this is something that you need to follow!

We’ll still have our Community Circle google meetings, on Wednesdays and Fridays too. Students will also still take their Country Quiz, on April 23rd. Otherwise, students should be working on the projects we have going, right now. Some students may even be using the next two weeks to catch up with some of the assignments that have already been posted, on google classroom.
April 15th update from Mrs. Z:
Poynter Forecasting is here! Be sure to look through all the Poynter forms, with your student, and get everything filled out and returned to Poynter by May 1! What an exciting time!
Mr. Kha and I decided to keep both 6th grade classes on the same schedule. Therefore, all sixth graders will receive ELA and Math instruction every school day. All sixth graders will also receive Social Studies instruction every Monday and Thursday and Science/Health instruction every Tuesday and Friday.
For the next two weeks, students are not going to be receiving new assignments, from me. They will continue to receive a new Advisory/Morning News, every school day.
The projects we have going, right now are: Eastern Europe Country Quiz Study (test on April 23rd), Historical Figure Study (due April 27th), April Book It (due May 13th), and Poynter Forecasting (due May 1st). Students should still write Distance Learning Journal entries on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and they should do iReady reading on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
gain, students are highly encouraged to e-mail me with questions they have, so we can continue to have those important teacher/student interactions. On Mondays, classwork from the prior week is due. At that time, I grade assignments and return them to students, through Google Classroom. Grades for those assignments my also be viewed on Parentvue/Studentvue, in the grade book section.
As always, please e-mail me with questions or concerns that you may have. We’ll keep our classroom community inclusive, safe, respectful, fun, informational, and caring!
April 9th update from Mrs. Z:
Hi Families! It was so great to see all the students at our Community Circle, on Wednesday! You could definitely tell that we all miss each other…a lot! I really hope that this update finds you and your family well.
As we settle into Distance Learning, what I’m seeing over and over again is that we are all in different places and life situations and that we need to allow ourselves to take things at our own pace. Please allow for that, in your life, and in your student’s learning!
In Google Classroom, students will notice that the lessons build upon each other, just as they would in our regular classroom. On the “Stream” tab, I post the Daily News/Advisory. There is always a video of me reviewing what is coming up for the day, and there is a PDF of what to expect for the day’s assignments. On the “Classwork” tab, students see the three subjects they have me for. The posted dates and due dates are listed next to the assignments. I will not remove these! If your student is just getting into Distance Learning, have your student start with the April 1st posts/assignments, and work his/her way on, from there. Take it step by step, and move at a pace that is comfortable for your family. If your student missed a due date, still have him/her submit it to me when he/she is done. There are due dates, but there will not be penalties for late work.
I am providing sixth grade learning opportunities every school day, in ELA, for those students who are ready for them. For those students who aren’t, allow them to slow down, go back, and do a little at a time. Every Tuesday and Friday, I am providing sixth grade learning opportunities, in Social Studies. All the learning opportunities are lessons that the sixth graders should be able to do on their own. Lessons are presented with an instructional video by me, all the learning materials needed, and written directions. Students are highly encouraged to e-mail me with questions they have, so we can continue to have those important teacher/student interactions.
Be sure to check your parentvue/studentvue account regularly. Here, you’ll be able to access teacher gradebook, for your student.

For the next two weeks, students are not going to be receiving new assignments, from me. They will continue to receive a new Advisory/Morning News, every school day.

Be sure to check your parentvue/studentvue account regularly. Here, you’ll be able to access teacher gradebook, for your student.
